Why your video is too big

TikTok accepts in-app uploads up to 287 MB and 10 minutes long. That’s a generous cap, but uploading a 280 MB clip over a phone connection takes long enough that most creators target a much smaller file: a 60-second clip at 1080×1920, 72 MB, uploads in seconds and looks identical on screen to a 280 MB version.

Vertical (9:16) is the only shape that fills a phone screen, which is where almost every TikTok is watched. Horizontal sources letterbox to tiny strips of video unless you crop them first.

How to compress video for tiktok in 4 steps

  1. Drop your video onto the page

Drag a video file (phone recording or screen capture) onto the drop zone. The encoder loads it from your disk into the browser tab.

  2. Pick the TikTok preset

Click "Or pick a platform" and choose TikTok. Output lands at 72 MB / 60 s / 1080×1920 - the right size and shape for in-app upload.

  3. Crop to vertical if your source is horizontal

Open Edit Mode and click "Vertical (9:16)". The encoder center-crops to vertical; the live preview shows what will be kept before you encode.

  4. Click Compress and upload to TikTok

Output is standard MP4 (H.264 + AAC). Upload it through the TikTok app or the web uploader; it plays inline as expected.

Common questions

What's TikTok's actual upload limit?

Up to 287 MB and 10 minutes for in-app uploads. Our preset is much smaller (72 MB / 60 s) because uploads at the cap take a long time and most TikToks are well under a minute anyway. If you need longer, switch to a custom size target after trimming.

Vertical or horizontal?

Vertical (9:16) fills the screen on phones, which is how almost every TikTok is consumed. If your source is horizontal, open Edit Mode and click “Vertical (9:16)” to center-crop to the right shape.

Will the quality hold up at 1080×1920 / 60 s / 72 MB?

Yes - that bitrate budget is plenty for 1080p at one minute. If you trim down to 30 seconds the quality only gets cleaner.

Why not just upload my original video?

TikTok’s app re-encodes everything anyway; pre-encoding to its target format gives you control over the framing (vertical crop), the length (trim), and the output quality. Plus it makes the upload faster.

How private is this?

Your video stays on your computer. The encoding runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded. Full privacy story.
